Description
Sorghum rust is caused by the fungal pathogen Puccinia purpurea. As an obligate parasite, this fungus relies entirely on living host tissues to complete its lifecycle, drawing nutrients from the plant cells and causing significant physiological stress during the most active growth phases.
The disease primarily targets various types of sorghum, including grain sorghum, forage sorghum, and sweet sorghum. While the fungus is highly host-specific, it can occasionally be found on related wild grasses, which act as alternative hosts that maintain the inoculum within the local environment.
Symptoms are easily identified by the appearance of small, elongated uredinia on both sides of the leaves. These pustules typically exhibit a deep purple or reddish-brown color, often surrounded by chlorotic or necrotic zones, which severely limit the leaf area available for photosynthesis.
The environmental requirements for Puccinia purpurea development involve high humidity and moderate temperatures. Dew, light rain, and overcast conditions create an ideal microclimate on the leaf surface, allowing spores to germinate and penetrate the host tissue within a matter of hours.
The economic impact of this disease is linked to reduced biomass, lower grain weight, and poor quality of the silage. Protecting crops requires an integrated approach to disease management to minimize the risk of yield loss. Key strategies include:
