Yellow rust, or stripe rust, is caused by the obligate fungal pathogen Puccinia striiformis. This disease is a significant threat to global cereal production, capable of causing devastating crop losses when environmental conditions favor the rapid proliferation of the fungal spores.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include wheat, barley, rye, and a variety of wild grasses. The fungus specializes in attacking the green parts of the plant, primarily leaves, but under severe infections, it can also spread to the heads and glumes, directly impacting the yield potential of the crop.

The primary symptom is the presence of bright yellow or orange pustules arranged in parallel rows, giving the foliage a striped appearance. These pustules contain massive amounts of urediniospores. As the disease progresses, the infected leaf tissue begins to wither and die, which drastically reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity.

The development of Puccinia striiformis is highly dependent on environmental conditions, preferring cool, wet weather. Optimal temperatures for infection range between 10°C and 15°C. High humidity or dew is essential for spore germination, while wind plays a critical role in the long-distance dispersal of the pathogen across regions.

The economic impact of stripe rust can be immense, leading to significant reductions in both grain weight and quality. Effective management strategies involve the cultivation of resistant or tolerant cultivars, which is the most sustainable approach, alongside the strategic application of systemic fungicides to mitigate damage during periods of high disease pressure.
