Purple leaf spot

Mycosphaerella louisianae

Description

Purple leaf spot, caused by the fungal pathogen Mycosphaerella louisianae, is a common and destructive foliar disease affecting strawberries. This fungus overwinters in crop debris, allowing it to re-emerge and infect new growth as environmental conditions become favorable during the spring and summer months.

The primary host for this pathogen is the cultivated strawberry. The disease specifically targets the leaf tissue, although it can occasionally spread to petioles and runners. By compromising the foliage, the fungus directly interferes with the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis effectively.

The characteristic symptoms begin as small, reddish-purple spots on the upper leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often developing a darker margin. In the center of mature spots, tiny black structures known as pycnidia appear, which serve as the source of secondary inoculum that spreads the infection across the field.

High humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures are the primary drivers of disease spread. Spores are easily disseminated by wind gusts or water splashes during irrigation. Dense canopies that prevent airflow provide the perfect microenvironment for the fungus to establish itself and multiply rapidly.

The economic impact is significant due to premature leaf senescence. When plants lose a substantial portion of their foliage late in the season, they fail to store enough energy for winter survival and next year's fruit production. This results in stunted growth, lower berry yields, and increased susceptibility to other biotic stressors.

  • Sanitation: removal and destruction of infected foliage after the harvest.
  • Improve air circulation by maintaining proper plant spacing.
  • Applying recommended fungicides preventively during periods of high humidity.
  • Choosing resistant strawberry cultivars to minimize chemical reliance.
