Description

The fungus Pyrenophora fugax (syn. Drechslera fugax) is a significant pathogen responsible for foliar leaf spot diseases in various cereal crops. As an ascomycete, it produces spores that facilitate both primary infection from crop residues and secondary spread during the growing season.

The host range of Pyrenophora fugax includes essential agricultural cereals such as wheat (Triticum aestivum), barley (Hordeum vulgare), and rye. Additionally, various wild grasses in the Poaceae family act as alternative hosts, maintaining the inoculum source throughout the year.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, chlorotic spots on leaves, which gradually evolve into necrotic lesions with a dark brown to blackish center. Often, a distinct yellow halo surrounds the spot. Under high humidity, these lesions coalesce, leading to extensive chlorosis, necrosis, and premature senescence of the foliage.

The development and dissemination of the pathogen are highly dependent on environmental conditions. Warm temperatures and prolonged leaf wetness, often caused by heavy dew or frequent rainfall, promote sporulation and infection cycles. Spores are primarily dispersed via wind and rain splashes, allowing the disease to spread rapidly through the field.

The pathogenicity of this fungus leads to significant yield losses by reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, which negatively impacts grain filling and crop quality. Integrated disease management is essential for control:

  • Apply systemic fungicides during critical growth stages;
  • Practice crop rotation to break the infection cycle;
  • Incorporate crop debris into the soil through deep tillage;
  • Use certified pathogen-free seeds treated with effective fungicides.
