Description

Tan spot, also known as yellow leaf spot, is a severe fungal disease of wheat caused by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis. The pathogen is a necrotrophic fungus that survives primarily in infected wheat stubble. As conservation tillage practices have become more common globally, the prevalence and economic significance of this disease have increased substantially.

The disease primarily attacks wheat, although it can infect other cereals like rye and triticale. The host range is wide enough to ensure that the pathogen remains present in agricultural environments where wheat is grown frequently or in monoculture systems without adequate residue management.

Symptoms typically begin as small, dark brown spots on the leaves, which quickly develop into a characteristic yellow halo or "tan" discoloration. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand into elliptical or irregular shapes, eventually merging to cover large areas of the leaf surface. In severe cases, the entire foliage can become necrotic, leading to a significant reduction in the plant's capacity for photosynthesis.

The development of tan spot is heavily dependent on moisture and moderate temperatures. Free moisture on the leaves, such as dew or rain, is required for the spores to germinate and infect plant tissue. Under favorable conditions, the infection cycle can repeat every few days, leading to rapid disease spread throughout the canopy, especially during the boot and flowering stages.

The economic impact of tan spot is characterized by reduced grain weight and poor milling quality, with yield losses often ranging from 10% to 50% under severe infestation. Management strategies involve a combination of practices: deep incorporation of crop residues into the soil, crop rotation with non-host species, and the timely application of fungicides, particularly those containing triazoles or strobilurins, during the vegetative development stages.
