Description

Rice blast is a severe fungal disease caused by the pathogen Pyricularia, specifically Pyricularia oryzae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive diseases affecting rice cultivation worldwide, capable of devastating yields across entire regions. The fungus impacts the plant's physiological processes by invading leaves, stems, nodes, and panicles.

The disease primarily affects rice, but similar species of Pyricularia can infect wheat, barley, and various wild grasses. The pathogen survives between seasons as mycelium in infected plant debris, seeds, and alternative grass hosts. Once conditions become favorable, it produces spores that are easily dispersed by wind and splashing rain.

Symptoms initially appear as small, water-soaked spots on leaves that eventually enlarge into diamond or spindle-shaped lesions with necrotic centers. A hallmark sign is the infection of the neck (node) of the panicle, known as "neck blast," which prevents nutrients from reaching the grains, resulting in empty or shriveled panicles that turn white prematurely.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of disease outbreaks. High relative humidity (approaching 100%), frequent dew, and temperatures between 20°C and 30°C are optimal for spore germination and infection. Furthermore, high-density planting and excessive nitrogen fertilization make crops significantly more susceptible to the blast fungus.

The economic impact of the disease is immense, often leading to total crop failure under severe infection pressure. Effective management requires an integrated approach:

  • using resistant and tolerant cultivars;
  • optimizing planting density and irrigation management;
  • maintaining balanced soil fertility;
  • applying preventative and curative fungicides at the tillering and heading stages.
