Pythium graminicola is a soil-borne oomycete pathogen responsible for root rot in a variety of grass species and cereal crops. It acts by attacking the root systems of young plants, causing necrosis and significantly impairing the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients.

The host range of this pathogen includes major agricultural crops such as wheat, barley, and maize, as well as turfgrass species. It survives in the soil as persistent oospores, which allow it to overwinter and withstand harsh conditions until favorable environment returns.

Visible symptoms often involve stunted plant growth, yellowing or chlorosis of the lower leaves, and brown, necrotic lesions on the roots. In severe cases, the entire root architecture becomes decayed, leading to plant collapse and reduced stand density in affected fields.

The development of the disease is highly correlated with wet soil conditions and cool temperatures. Pythium graminicola produces zoospores that swim through soil water films to infect root tips, making waterlogged areas significantly more prone to severe outbreaks.
