Pythium torulosum is a soil-borne pathogen belonging to the oomycetes class, recognized as a significant cause of root rot and seedling damping-off. It thrives in aquatic or saturated soil environments, acting as an opportunistic invader of the root tissues of various horticultural and agricultural crops. Due to its motile zoospores, it is highly efficient at colonizing new hosts in water-rich settings.
This pathogen impacts a wide range of plants, notably turfgrasses, bedding plants, and various vegetable species. Young, tender root systems are particularly susceptible, as the pathogen utilizes enzymes to breach the cell walls. In greenhouses and nurseries, the impact is often severe, leading to significant stand loss shortly after germination.
The visible signs of infestation include necrotic, brown, or mushy roots that may easily slough off. Because the root system cannot function effectively, the foliage appears stunted, chlorotic, or exhibits signs of wilting even when soil moisture seems adequate. In advanced cases, the internal vascular tissue of the root turns brown and necrotic, eventually leading to plant collapse.
The development of Pythium torulosum is highly correlated with environmental stressors, specifically poor drainage and soil compaction. The pathogen's zoospores are released from sporangia and swim towards root exudates, making the infection process rapid under high-humidity conditions. Cool temperatures often exacerbate the disease, as they weaken the host's ability to resist the pathogen.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural controls include improving soil aeration, ensuring proper water management, and maintaining optimal pH levels. Chemical control involves the application of fungicides specifically labeled for oomycetes, while biological control using beneficial bacteria or fungi like Trichoderma can help suppress population levels in the rhizosphere.
