Radiomycosis is a fungal disease caused by various species within the Radiomyces genus. While typically recognized as soil-dwelling saprotrophs, these fungi can behave as opportunistic pathogens under stressed environmental conditions for the plant. The disease manifests primarily as a form of soft rot, where the fungus secretes enzymes that cause rapid disintegration of host plant tissues.

The host range of Radiomyces includes a variety of greenhouse-grown vegetables, ornamental plants, and seedlings. It often attacks crops grown in organic-rich media or those kept in stagnant, high-humidity environments. Furthermore, harvested produce is particularly susceptible to these fungi during storage if the climate control fails or hygiene protocols are neglected.

Symptoms of the infection typically begin as localized, water-soaked lesions that quickly expand in size. As the disease advances, these lesions soften and turn brown or black, often accompanied by the emergence of a fluffy white or greyish mycelium on the surface. In the final stages, the affected tissue loses its structure entirely, becoming a liquefied, necrotic mass.

Fungal development and spread are strictly correlated with environmental factors. Radiomycosis thrives in environments with high relative humidity and moderate to warm temperatures, which facilitate rapid sporulation and mycelial growth. Spread often occurs through airborne spores, contaminated water supplies, or physical contact with tools and containers that have not been adequately sterilized.

Effective management and protection strategies focus on environmental modification and sanitation. Growers should prioritize improving air circulation and maintaining proper soil drainage to prevent the anaerobic conditions that favor fungal growth.
