Description

Radish yellow is a serious plant pathology caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized bacteria without cell walls that reside in the phloem of infected plants. Once established, these pathogens disrupt the vascular system, preventing the translocation of nutrients and leading to systemic decline.

The host range of this disease covers a wide variety of cruciferous crops and common weeds. Since phytoplasmas survive within the roots of perennial plants, they can persist in the environment for several seasons, creating permanent infection reservoirs near agricultural fields.

Symptoms begin with marginal chlorosis (yellowing) of the leaves, which eventually spreads inward. Infected radishes exhibit severe stunting, leaf deformation, and abnormal development of the root system, which turns woody and fibrous, rendering the crop unmarketable.

Transmission occurs through sap-sucking insects, primarily leafhoppers. These insects feed on the phloem of an infected plant, acquire the phytoplasma, and then introduce it into healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions, facilitating rapid spread across the field.

Managing Radish yellow requires a combination of vector control and sanitation to reduce the pathogen pressure.
