Rajasthan downy mildew

Dange

Description

Rajasthan downy mildew is a devastating plant disease caused by the oomycete Peronosclerospora sorghi. It is recognized as a systemic infection that disrupts the plant's metabolic processes, leading to stunted growth, reproductive failure, and severe yield losses in agricultural production.

The primary host for this pathogen is maize, although it is also known to affect sorghum. The disease is particularly prevalent in regions where climatic conditions allow for the survival and rapid spread of the pathogen, causing significant economic impact for farmers in affected areas.

Symptoms typically include chlorotic streaking on leaves, starting from the base. As the disease progresses, a dense, white-to-gray downy growth composed of sporangiophores appears on the underside of the leaves. In severely affected maize plants, ears fail to develop properly, and the plant structure becomes severely distorted, often appearing broom-like.

The development of this disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and temperatures around 20–25°C. The pathogen produces oospores that can survive in the soil or in crop debris for extended periods, serving as a primary source of inoculum for subsequent seasons.

Management strategies focus on a holistic approach including:

  • Selection of resistant or tolerant maize cultivars.
  • Crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
  • Sanitation practices, including the removal and burning of infected crop residues.
  • Seed treatment with systemic fungicides to protect seedlings during the early stages of growth.

Integrated pest management remains the most effective way to mitigate the spread of Rajasthan downy mildew. By combining resistant germplasm with cultural practices and chemical intervention when necessary, growers can successfully minimize the impact of the disease on their crops.
