Description

Pathogen and disease type. Ramularia leaf spot is caused by the fungus Ramularia rumicis-crispi, a deuteromycete pathogen. It is a foliar disease that targets the leaves of sorrel, colonizing the tissues and interfering with the plant's photosynthetic capacity, which eventually leads to chlorosis and necrotic lesions.

Host plants. The pathogen is highly host-specific, primarily affecting plants of the Rumex genus, commonly known as sorrel or dock. It is particularly problematic in intensive cultivation systems where sorrel is grown for culinary or medicinal use, as the leaf quality directly impacts the economic value of the harvest.

Symptoms and signs of infection. Symptoms typically appear as small, angular, or circular spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots may develop a greyish or light-brown necrotic center surrounded by a darker purple or brown margin. Under conditions of high relative humidity, a white, powdery fungal growth (conidiophores) becomes visible on the underside of the leaves.

Conditions for development and severity. Ramularia rumicis-crispi thrives in cool to moderate temperatures and high moisture levels, often following prolonged rainfall or heavy dew. The inoculum survives in the soil and on infected crop debris. The severity of the disease is higher in poorly ventilated fields or during seasons with frequent precipitation, leading to significant foliage loss.

Control and preventative measures. Integrated pest management is essential for control. Recommended practices include crop rotation to reduce soil-borne inoculum and the immediate removal and destruction of infected plant material. Ensuring proper field drainage and adequate spacing to promote air circulation can significantly lower disease pressure. If chemical intervention is necessary, fungicides should be applied early, strictly following the manufacturer’s labels regarding pre-harvest intervals.
