Ranunculus latent virus (RLV) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the Potexvirus genus. As the name suggests, this virus is characterized by its latent infection cycle, where host plants show little to no overt signs of disease, often allowing the virus to spread undetected throughout a cultivation area.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are members of the Ranunculaceae family, particularly the widely cultivated Ranunculus asiaticus. While the virus may not cause immediate death, it significantly compromises the plant's vigor, flower quality, and overall market value, leading to cumulative economic losses.
Symptoms, when they do appear, typically manifest as mild leaf chlorosis, slight mosaic patterns, or stunted growth. Because these symptoms are often subtle, they are frequently mistaken for environmental stress or nutrient deficiencies, leading growers to overlook the presence of a viral agent.
Transmission occurs mechanically, primarily through the handling of plants, contaminated pruning tools, or direct contact between neighboring plants. The virus is known for its environmental stability, which allows it to persist on surfaces and tools, facilitating rapid transmission within a greenhouse or garden environment.
Since there are no chemical treatments to cure viral infections in plants, management strategy relies entirely on prevention. Key measures include sourcing virus-free planting material, rigorous sterilization of horticultural tools after every use, and the immediate roguing and disposal of any plants suspected of carrying the infection.
