Arabis mosaic (Arabis mosaic virus, ArMV) is a significant viral disease caused by a nepovirus. It is a systemic infection that colonizes the vascular tissues of host plants, severely impacting their vigor, physiological processes, and overall productivity throughout the growing season.
The virus affects a vast range of hosts, including ornamental plants, vegetables, and fruit crops. Raspberry is highly susceptible to this pathogen, often showing symptoms that lead to stunted growth and diminished fruit quality, making it a critical concern for berry growers.
Symptoms of the infection typically include chlorotic mottling, mosaic patterns on leaves, leaf distortion, and severe stunting. In raspberries, infected plants may display shortened internodes and a generalized yellowing, which hampers the plant's ability to develop healthy canes and robust fruit sets.
The primary vector for the transmission of ArMV in the soil environment is the ectoparasitic nematode belonging to the genus Xiphinema. These nematodes acquire the virus while feeding on the roots of infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy roots. Transmission via infected cuttings or pollen also plays a role.
Control measures primarily focus on prevention, as there are no chemical cures for viral infections in plants. Key strategies include planting certified virus-free nursery stock, managing nematode populations in the soil through fallowing or nematicides, and strictly roguing any symptomatic plants to prevent the spread of the pathogen.
