Description

Broken midrib is a physiological disorder affecting maize crops, frequently mistaken for a fungal or bacterial infection. Although it lacks a biological pathogen, its impact on the plant's structural integrity makes it a significant concern for corn growers worldwide during the growing season.

The primary crop affected is corn. The symptoms are characterized by a transverse snapping or folding of the leaf midrib, typically occurring in the central or lower portion of the leaf. Following the breakage, the leaf tissue distal to the fracture site begins to wither and die, reducing the plant's foliage.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of this disorder. Sudden fluctuations in temperature, rapid humidity changes, and high wind speeds often trigger the breakage. When the leaf grows faster than its structural tissues can harden, the midrib becomes brittle and snaps under moderate mechanical stress.

The economic damage is caused by the significant loss of photosynthetic surface area. Since the midrib serves as the primary vascular conduit for the leaf, its rupture impairs the transport of water and nutrients, which ultimately leads to reduced grain fill and lower overall crop yield.

Because Broken midrib is not an infectious disease, traditional fungicides are ineffective. Effective management strategies focus on:
