Broken midrib is defined as a non-infectious physiological disorder primarily affecting tobacco plants. It manifests as a mechanical rupture of the leaf's midvein, which compromises the vascular system and leads to the collapse of the leaf blade. This condition is not caused by any pathogen, parasite, or biotic agent.
From a biological standpoint, the disorder is linked to the anatomical composition of the tobacco leaf. When the leaf undergoes rapid growth, the midrib tissue can become highly turgid and brittle. If the internal structure cannot withstand mechanical stress, the structural integrity fails, resulting in a break.
The development of the condition is often triggered by environmental factors, particularly rapid fluctuations in moisture levels and wind gusts. Excessive nitrogen uptake can further exacerbate the issue by promoting rapid, succulent tissue growth that lacks sufficient mechanical strength to support the weight of the expanding leaf.
Conditions favorable for the spread of this disorder include humid climates followed by high-wind events. These weather patterns create the physical force necessary to snap the weakened midribs. Furthermore, the lack of windbreaks around agricultural fields significantly increases the incidence of this problem.
The economic impact is significant as affected leaves lose their commercial value due to browning and necrosis. Furthermore, the broken tissues serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, such as soft rot bacteria or various fungi, which can degrade the overall quality of the harvested crop.
