Reticularia is a genus of slime molds (myxomycetes) that frequently appears on the bark of trees and shrubs. While often mistaken for a serious plant disease, Reticularia organisms are not true plant pathogens. They are typically saprotrophic, feeding on dead organic matter rather than living plant tissues, meaning they do not directly infect or kill healthy trees.
The causative agents are species such as Reticularia lycoperdon, which produce conspicuous fruiting bodies known as aethalia. These structures often look like white, puffy, foam-like masses when young, eventually turning into brown, dust-like spore masses as they mature. The organism's life cycle is tied to environmental conditions rather than a parasitic relationship with the host plant.
These organisms are commonly found on deciduous and coniferous trees, especially those with rough or decaying bark. They are more prevalent on older specimens where crevices in the bark trap organic debris and moisture. The presence of these slime molds is often a secondary indicator that the tree surface is retaining moisture or has localized areas of decaying bark.
Development and spread are triggered by high humidity and the presence of organic film on the tree surface. Rain and wind effectively disperse their spores across the garden. In shaded areas with poor air circulation, these organisms can quickly colonize moist bark, making them particularly noticeable after long periods of rainy weather in the spring and summer.
The impact of Reticularia on tree health is negligible as they do not invade the cambium or vascular system of the host. However, their presence often highlights areas of dead bark or open wounds that may be susceptible to true wood-rotting fungi or wood-boring insects. Therefore, while the slime mold itself is harmless, the conditions it inhabits should be addressed.
Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Removing dead or loose bark from trunks to eliminate habitats.
- Ensuring proper canopy thinning to improve airflow and bark drying.
- Practicing diligent sanitation by removing debris and decaying wood from the tree crown.
- Applying preventive tree paints to seal surface cracks or wounds.
- Monitoring the tree for signs of true disease, such as cankers or bacterial rot, which could be the actual cause of plant decline.
