Lettuce necrotic yellows

Lettuce necrotic

Description

Lettuce necrotic yellows is a devastating viral disease caused by a virus belonging to the Rhabdoviridae family. The pathogen systematically invades the plant's vascular tissues, severely disrupting nutrient transport and physiological development, which leads to stunted growth and metabolic collapse.

While primarily recognized for its impact on lettuce, this virus poses a significant threat to various agricultural crops. It has been documented to infect legumes, specifically chickpea, where it causes substantial yield reductions and affects the overall quality of the pods and seeds produced.

The visual symptoms of the disease are quite distinct: leaves exhibit yellowing (chlorosis), followed by necrotic spots, curling of leaf margins, and stunted leaf development. In severe cases, the growing points of the plant may die, leading to the collapse of the plant rosette and total loss of potential yield.

The transmission of this virus is strictly linked to insect vectors, primarily aphids. When aphids feed on infected plants, they acquire the virus and subsequently transmit it to healthy plants during feeding. The disease spread is most aggressive in environments where aphid populations thrive and weeds act as reservoir hosts.

Management strategies must focus on both vector control and cultural practices. Growers should implement a rigorous weed management program to remove alternate hosts, apply timely insecticide treatments to suppress aphid populations, and utilize resistant cultivars whenever available to minimize the incidence of infection.
