Description
Lettuce necrotic stunt is caused by the Lettuce necrotic stunt virus (LNSV), a member of the genus Alphanecrovirus within the Tombusviridae family. This viral pathogen is a significant threat to lettuce production, capable of causing devastating yield losses and degrading the quality of leaf and head lettuce varieties.
The primary clinical signs of this infection include severe stunting, leaf yellowing, and necrotic spotting. Infected plants often exhibit curled margins and distorted growth, which severely reduces their marketability. In many cases, the root system is also underdeveloped, further hindering the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients efficiently.
The biology of LNSV is uniquely dependent on the soil-borne fungus-like organism Olpidium brassicae. The virus is transmitted when the motile zoospores of the fungus carry the viral particles into the root tissues of the lettuce plant. This vector-mediated transmission allows the virus to persist in the soil for extended periods, even in the absence of a host crop.
Disease prevalence is heavily influenced by soil moisture levels and temperature, as these factors dictate the activity of the Olpidium vector. Wet, cool soil conditions provide an optimal environment for the zoospores to move through the soil profile and infect new roots. High-density planting and repetitive cultivation cycles on the same ground significantly increase the risk of an outbreak.
Effective management and control strategies focus on sanitation and vector inhibition:
- soil steam sterilization or chemical fumigation in greenhouse environments;
- utilizing resistant or tolerant lettuce cultivars where available;
- ensuring rigorous field hygiene to prevent the spread of soil and contaminated tools;
- maintaining good drainage to reduce the activity of the fungal vector;
- implementing long-term crop rotation to break the cycle of the soil-borne vector.
