Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Rhexocercosporidium, a pathogen that affects the vegetative parts of various cereals. It belongs to the group of anamorphic fungi and acts as a primary necrotroph, causing damage by releasing enzymes that destroy plant cell walls and lead to localized tissue necrosis.
The primary host crops for this pathogen include wheat, barley, and various wild grasses. The disease typically impacts the leaves and leaf sheaths, though under favorable conditions, it can progress to the stems, significantly weakening the plant structure and interfering with nutrient translocation during the grain-filling stage.
Symptoms are identified by the development of characteristic spotting patterns. These spots often appear as elongated or irregularly shaped lesions with a chlorotic halo. As the infection progresses, the center of the spot becomes necrotic and may exhibit a grayish-olive velvety appearance, which represents the sporulation of the fungus during humid conditions.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically prolonged leaf wetness. High relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C are ideal for the germination of conidia. The fungus overwinters on crop debris and infected stubble, which act as the primary inoculum source for the following season's crops.
The damage caused by the disease is cumulative. By reducing the green leaf area, the fungus limits the plant's photosynthetic capacity. This results in reduced grain filling, lower test weight, and reduced overall yield potential. If left unmanaged, the impact on grain quality can lead to significant financial losses for farmers.
Integrated disease management (IDM) is the most effective approach for control:
- Crop rotation to break the life cycle of the pathogen by minimizing host availability.
- Tillage practices that incorporate crop residues deep into the soil to accelerate decomposition.
- Timely application of systemic fungicides during the flag leaf stage if disease thresholds are met.
- Selection of resistant or tolerant cereal cultivars to minimize susceptibility to fungal infection.
