Description
Rhizoctonia theobromae is a fungal pathogen responsible for a specific disease known as cocoa pod rot. This fungus survives in the soil and on crop debris primarily as mycelium and sclerotial structures, which allows it to persist in the environment for extended periods until environmental conditions favor the infection of new hosts.
The primary host for this disease is the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). While the fungus mostly targets the pods at various stages of development, it can also affect young twigs and branches under severe infestation conditions, resulting in significant yield losses and reduced quality of the fermented cocoa beans.
The primary symptom of the infection includes the appearance of brown, circular spots on the pod surface. These lesions expand rapidly, eventually covering large portions of the pod. As the disease progresses, the internal tissues of the pod undergo rot, often accompanied by a visible mycelial growth on the exterior, rendering the seeds inside unfit for processing.
Development and spread of the pathogen are highly dependent on high moisture levels and warm temperatures. Frequent rainfall, high humidity, and lack of air circulation within the cocoa plantation significantly increase the risk of an outbreak, as the fungus thrives in stagnant, humid environments that facilitate the transmission of mycelial fragments.
Management and prevention of Rhizoctonia theobromae involve a multi-faceted approach:
- Regular pruning of cocoa trees to improve light penetration and air movement.
- Aggressive sanitation practices to remove and destroy all infected pods and plant material.
- Maintaining proper spacing between trees to prevent high humidity microclimates.
- Application of appropriate fungicides during periods of high disease pressure to protect sensitive tissues.
