Rhodotorula is a genus of unicellular pigmented yeasts that are globally distributed in the environment. In the field of agronomy, while often regarded as saprophytes, certain species can behave as opportunistic plant pathogens, causing surface lesions and degradation on various fruit and vegetable crops.

The fungus is characterized by its distinct red, orange, or pink pigments, which are carotenoids produced to protect the cells from environmental stress. When these yeasts colonize plant surfaces, they thrive on sugars and nutrients present in plant exudates or in damaged tissues resulting from mechanical or insect-related injuries.

Symptoms of Rhodotorula infection typically present as slimy or powdery biofilms on the surface of fruits and foliage. Unlike some other fungal diseases, the presence of this yeast is marked by its vibrant coloration, which becomes more intense as the colony grows. Heavily infected fruits may experience localized softening, tissue browning, and eventually, decay.

The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. It spreads through wind, water splashes, and insect vectors. Because it favors moist environments, it is particularly problematic in greenhouses or during prolonged rainy seasons before harvest.

Effective management strategy includes:

• Optimizing irrigation systems to minimize leaf wetness.
• Prompt harvesting to prevent prolonged exposure to field humidity.
• Applying preventive fungicides during critical developmental stages.
• Maintaining proper sanitation in storage facilities to prevent post-harvest spread.

By reducing physical damage to crops and managing moisture levels, farmers can significantly lower the risk of yeast colonization and ensure the longevity and quality of the final agricultural product.
