Description
Rubus stunt is a destructive plant disease caused by a phytoplasma, a type of specialized bacteria that lacks a cell wall. This pathogen colonizes the phloem of the host plant, effectively hijacking the transport of nutrients and hormones, which leads to stunted growth, reduced yields, and eventually the death of the raspberry canes.
The disease primarily affects the red raspberry (Rubus idaeus), though other Rubus species can also act as hosts. Because the phytoplasma is systemic, once a plant is infected, the entire root system and all subsequent canes will carry the pathogen, making the plant a permanent reservoir for further infection.
Symptoms are distinct and often visually alarming: infected canes appear short, thin, and spindly with significantly shortened internodes. This results in a bushy, broom-like appearance known as witches' broom. The foliage often yellows or develops necrotic margins, and flowers may become malformed, leading to small, dry, or entirely absent fruit.
The spread of Rubus stunt is entirely dependent on insect vectors, most notably leafhoppers, which transmit the phytoplasma while feeding on the sap. The disease spreads rapidly in areas where these insects are prevalent, particularly during warm and dry summers, and it can quickly move through a commercial planting if left unchecked.
There is no chemical cure for Rubus stunt, which necessitates a strict management protocol focusing on exclusion and sanitation.
- Only plant certified, disease-free nursery stock.
- Regularly scout the field and rogue out (remove and destroy) any infected plants immediately upon discovery.
- Implement an aggressive insect control program to manage leafhopper populations throughout the growing season.
- Maintain a weed-free buffer zone around the planting to eliminate alternative host plants.
- Remove any wild brambles nearby that could serve as a source of inoculum.
