Rugulopteryx okamurae is a highly invasive species of brown algae that poses a significant threat to marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems. While not a plant disease in the traditional agricultural sense, it functions as a biological invader that severely damages the ecological balance, impacting aquaculture and maritime resources significantly.

The organism, Rugulopteryx okamurae, originates from the Pacific Ocean but has successfully colonized the Mediterranean. By aggressively outcompeting native seaweed and seagrass species, it disrupts the food web and drastically reduces the habitable environment for many economically important fish and invertebrate species.
