Sarcodon squamosus, commonly known as the scaly tooth mushroom, is a fungus belonging to the Thelephorales order. While recognized as a wild edible species, from a forest pathology perspective, it serves as a mycorrhizal fungus that forms complex relationships with the root systems of coniferous trees. Its role in the ecosystem can shift between beneficial symbiosis and an influence that stresses tree physiology.

The biological agent involved is the fungal mycelium, which infiltrates the root rhizosphere. In the context of forest protection, it is not classified as a typical crop disease but rather as an indicator of soil and root environment dynamics. The mechanism involves nutrient exchange between the fungal network and the host plant, which can significantly alter the tree's health when ecological conditions are suboptimal.

Pine species, particularly the Scots pine, are the primary hosts affected by the presence of Sarcodon squamosus. Symptoms include reduced annual growth, thinning of the needle canopy, and discoloration of needles. The appearance of large, scaly-capped fruiting bodies near the base of the tree is the most diagnostic sign of the fungus's active presence in the root zone.

Development conditions depend heavily on soil moisture levels and the depth of the organic litter layer. The fungus thrives in moist, acidic forest environments typical of coniferous habitats. Sporulation and colonisation are triggered by late summer and autumn rainfall, allowing the mycelium to establish itself more firmly within the root systems of available host trees.

The damage caused by the fungus relates to the reduction of tree vitality, making the stands more susceptible to bark beetles and other secondary pests. Preventive and control measures include:

  • Regular monitoring of tree stands for signs of reduced vigor.
  • Implementing proper forest hygiene to remove decaying organic matter if it promotes over-colonization.
