Sarcomonadea constitutes a diverse class of protists within the supergroup Rhizaria, known for their presence in various soil environments. While often overlooked, these organisms act as dynamic components of the soil microbiome, interacting closely with plant roots and influencing the rhizosphere's ecological balance.
These protists can affect a wide range of agricultural crops by altering the bacterial composition of the root zone. By grazing on beneficial rhizosphere bacteria, they can indirectly reduce the plant's natural resistance to soil-borne pathogens, leading to stunted development and diminished nutrient uptake capacity.
