Cereal smut, associated with the order Ustilaginales, refers to a group of serious fungal diseases that affect major cereal crops globally. The causative agents are biotrophic fungi that colonize host tissues, replacing healthy grain or other plant parts with masses of black, soot-like fungal spores.
This pathogen complex attacks a wide range of monocotyledonous plants, including wheat, barley, oats, rye, and maize. Depending on the species, the infection can be localized in the inflorescence, stems, or leaves, significantly altering the plant's metabolic processes and overall growth architecture.
The characteristic symptoms typically manifest during the flowering stage as the transformation of floral parts into a black powdery mass of spores.
