Under specific conditions, it acts as a spoiler of fruit and vegetable crops, utilizing glucose and other sugars to fuel its rapid proliferation.

As an ascomycete fungus, the pathogen reproduces via binary fission, creating a septum that divides the cell. Unlike budding yeasts, this method is highly efficient, allowing it to colonize nutrient-rich environments rapidly. In agricultural ecosystems, it is commonly associated with fermenting organic matter, which can serve as a reservoir for infecting healthy crop harvest if sanitation is ignored.

The symptoms of contamination include the formation of yeast-like biofilms or fuzzy layers on the surface of produce, particularly on fruits with high sugar content. As the organism consumes sugars, it releases metabolic by-products that alter the flavor and texture of the product, causing rapid softening and tissue degradation. The presence of mechanical injury to the plant surface is the primary factor allowing the yeast to penetrate the protective skin of fruits or vegetables. Management strategies focus on the post-harvest chain to prevent the growth of Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Key preventative measures include the maintenance of cold chain protocols to inhibit fungal metabolism, the prompt removal of bruised or damaged produce from storage, and ensuring adequate ventilation to reduce surface moisture.
