Description
Sclerosporosis is a serious fungal-like disease caused by oomycetes from the Sclerosporaceae family. Known as a type of downy mildew, it acts as an obligate parasite, primarily attacking cereals and graminaceous crops. The disease is known for its systemic nature, meaning it can spread throughout the entire plant once infection is established.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are maize (corn) and sorghum. The infection can occur at any growth stage, starting from seedling emergence. In some cases, the disease affects wild grasses, which serve as alternative hosts, ensuring the survival of the pathogen in the field environment across different seasons.
Common symptoms of Sclerosporosis include the development of chlorotic streaks on leaves, which eventually turn necrotic. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, excessive tillering, and severe deformation of the reproductive structures. In many cases, the ears of corn fail to develop properly or become completely sterile, significantly reducing grain yield.
The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions. High soil moisture and moderate temperatures (between +15°C and +26°C) are ideal for the germination of oospores. These resting spores can persist in the soil for several years, making the disease difficult to eradicate through simple rotation practices alone.
The economic impact of Sclerosporosis is substantial, as it leads to widespread crop failure and quality degradation. Control measures are primarily preventive and include the selection of resistant hybrids, as fungicides alone are often insufficient once the systemic infection has taken hold. Proper soil drainage and rigorous sanitation of crop residues are essential steps in reducing the inoculum pressure.
