The disease is caused by the fungal pathogen Septoriella elongata, which is closely associated with complex leaf spot diseases affecting various cereal crops. This pathogen is a significant biotic factor that impacts the physiological health of wheat plants during their growing cycle.

The primary hosts for this pathogen include wheat (Triticum aestivum and Triticum durum), though it can also be found on other related grass species. The fungus infects the foliage, starting from the lower canopy and spreading upwards, eventually affecting the flag leaf, which is vital for grain filling.

Symptoms typically present as small, chlorotic spots that expand into necrotic lesions with a characteristic brown or grey appearance. A diagnostic feature is the presence of pycnidia, appearing as tiny black dots within the lesions, which house the fungal spores responsible for secondary infections.
