Description

The Sequiviridae family consists of a group of plant-pathogenic viruses characterized by a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome. These viruses possess isometric particles and are categorized as systemic plant pathogens that severely disrupt host plant cell functions. Because they colonize the vascular tissues, their systemic spread makes them difficult to eradicate once a crop field has been compromised.

These viruses affect a variety of economically important crops, ranging from staple grains like rice to various vegetable species. A well-known representative of this family is the Rice tungro spherical virus, which causes significant economic loss in Asian agriculture. Each virus within the family has specific host preferences, often determined by the presence and activity of their associated insect vectors.

Symptoms of Sequiviridae infections are generally systemic, manifesting as chlorosis, mosaic patterns, mottling, and severe stunting of the host plant. The severity of these symptoms often depends on the plant's age at the time of infection and the environmental stress levels.

The development and distribution of these diseases are primarily driven by the population dynamics of insect vectors, such as leafhoppers or aphids. The transmission process is efficient, often requiring only a short feeding period for the vector to acquire and subsequently inoculate the virus into healthy tissues. Environmental factors that promote vector reproduction, such as specific humidity and temperature ranges, are critical to disease outbreaks.

Management of Sequiviridae involves integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Since no curative chemical treatments exist, efforts must focus on preventing infection: utilizing disease-free seeds or seedlings, implementing strict weed control to remove virus reservoirs, and applying timely insecticide treatments to minimize vector pressure. Regular crop scouting and early removal of symptomatic plants can also help to contain the spread of the virus within a field.
