The shallot mite, scientifically known as Aceria tulipae, is a microscopic arachnid that acts as a primary vector for viral diseases in allium crops. Despite its small size, this pest causes significant economic losses by facilitating the spread of viral infections that stunt growth and reduce the quality of the final product.

The mite primarily infests shallots, garlic, and onions. It thrives by residing within the inner scales of the bulbs and between the leaf bases, making it extremely difficult to detect during the early stages of infestation. This cryptic behavior allows the pest to go unnoticed until severe damage has already occurred.

Symptoms of an infestation include leaf distortion, twisted growth, yellowing, and mosaic-like patterns on the foliage. Infected bulbs tend to dry out, shrivel, and become susceptible to secondary infections by fungi and bacteria. Over time, the plant's vitality is severely compromised, leading to poor bulb formation and reduced yields.

The development of the shallot mite is favored by warm, humid environments, often spreading rapidly in field settings as well as in storage facilities. Because the mite can persist on plant debris and within stored bulbs, it easily transmits from one season to the next, especially if proper hygiene practices are not maintained.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies to reduce mite populations. Preventative measures are essential for long-term control:

  • Use only certified, mite-free seed bulbs for planting.
  • Rotate crops to prevent the build-up of mite populations in the soil.
  • Remove and destroy all infected plant materials after harvest to prevent carry-over.
  • Implement strict sanitation protocols in storage areas to kill lingering mites.
  • Apply targeted acaricides during the early stages of infestation if necessary.
