Sida golden mosaic is a viral disease caused by the Sida golden mosaic virus (SiGMV), a member of the Geminiviridae family. This pathogen is known for its ability to cause significant economic damage by affecting the physiological processes of host plants, leading to severe yield reductions.
The virus primarily affects plant species within the Malvaceae family, most notably the Sida genus and cotton crops. By utilizing wild weed species as reservoir hosts, the virus can persist in agricultural landscapes, making it particularly difficult to eradicate through simple rotation alone.
The disease is characterized by distinct chlorotic or golden-yellow patches that form mosaic patterns on the leaves. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, and overall reduction in vitality, which directly interferes with the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and store energy for development.
Transmission occurs primarily through the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci), which acquires the virus while feeding on infected sap and spreads it to healthy plants.
