Siphoviridae is a family of bacteriophages characterized by long, non-contractile tails and double-stranded DNA genomes. In the field of agronomy, they are not classified as plant pathogens, but rather as biological control agents that target specific bacterial populations. They serve as a natural defense mechanism against various bacteria that cause severe diseases in crops.

The biological target of Siphoviridae includes phytopathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas, and Erwinia. These bacteria are responsible for significant losses in agriculture, causing symptoms like leaf spots, soft rots, and systemic vascular wilt in tomatoes, potatoes, and various fruit trees. By infecting and lysing these bacterial cells, Siphoviridae mitigate the spread of plant disease.

Symptoms of the bacterial diseases that Siphoviridae helps control include water-soaked lesions, necrotic spots, and wilting of plant tissues. Unlike chemical pesticides, phage therapy is highly specific, targeting only the pathogen and leaving beneficial soil microorganisms unharmed.
