Description

Yellow rust, or stripe rust, is a severe fungal disease of cereals caused by the pathogen Soleella striiformis (formerly Puccinia striiformis). It is widely recognized as a significant constraint to wheat production globally, capable of causing widespread yield losses due to its ability to spread rapidly via airborne urediniospores over long distances.

The host range of Soleella striiformis primarily includes wheat (both winter and spring varieties), barley, rye, and various species of wild grasses. These wild grasses often serve as green bridges or reservoirs, allowing the pathogen to survive during unfavorable seasons and facilitating the primary inoculum for new crops.

The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of small, bright yellow to orange-yellow pustules arranged in parallel rows or stripes along the longitudinal axis of the leaves. As the disease progresses, these stripes can cover the entire leaf surface, leading to chlorosis, necrosis, and premature senescence of the plant, which severely impairs grain filling and plant development.

Epidemiological development is heavily influenced by environmental conditions. The fungus favors relatively cool and moist weather, with optimal temperatures for infection ranging from 8 °C to 15 °C. High humidity and the presence of dew are critical for spore germination and successful colonization of the host tissue, often leading to explosive disease outbreaks in early spring.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical practices. The most sustainable approach is the deployment of resistant cultivars, although the pathogen's ability to evolve and overcome resistance genes remains a major challenge. Agronomic practices like early sowing dates, removing self-sown wheat (volunteer plants), and the timely application of systemic fungicides are essential to mitigate economic losses.
