Description

Sorosphaerulosis is a plant disease caused by pathogens of the genus Sorosphaerula. These organisms are members of the Plasmodiophorales order, which are obligate parasites that typically inhabit the root systems of various plant species. Due to their complex life cycle and resilient resting spores, they pose a constant challenge to plant health in various environmental conditions.

The primary hosts for these pathogens are plants belonging to the Brassicaceae family. The infection affects the root hairs and epidermal cells, leading to abnormal cellular enlargement and division. This process results in the formation of galls or tumor-like structures, which disrupt the plant's vascular system, preventing the efficient uptake of water and vital nutrients.

Symptoms of the infection include stunted plant growth, leaf chlorosis, and periodic wilting, even under adequate irrigation levels. The physiological stress caused by the root damage makes the plants susceptible to secondary infections by bacteria and fungi. In severe cases, the entire root system may decay, leading to the rapid collapse and death of the plant in the field or greenhouse.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly soil moisture and temperature. High soil humidity and poor drainage are primary catalysts for the spread of zoospores, which travel through soil water films to find new hosts. The spores can remain dormant in the soil for several years, making the elimination of the pathogen from infested fields a difficult task.

Management strategies must be preventative, as there are limited curative treatments. The most effective approach involves a combination of agricultural techniques to reduce pathogen pressure:

  • Implementing strict crop rotation intervals (4–6 years);
  • Applying lime to increase soil pH, which hinders pathogen activity;
  • Ensuring proper soil drainage to prevent waterlogging;
  • Removing and destroying infected plant debris;
  • Utilizing certified disease-free seeds and seedlings.
