Spartium witches' broom is a serious plant disease caused by phytoplasmas, which are small, specialized bacteria that colonize the phloem tissue of the host. This infection leads to a severe disruption of the plant's metabolic processes and hormone balance, preventing normal development and structural integrity.

The disease primarily affects species of the Spartium genus. The pathogen is transmitted systemically within the plant and is spread from one host to another mainly by sucking insects, such as leafhoppers and psyllids. Once an insect acquires the phytoplasma while feeding, it can transmit the infection to healthy plants throughout its lifespan.

The hallmark symptom is the formation of dense clusters of thin, stunted, and distorted branches that originate from a single point, resembling a broom. Additional signs include chlorosis of the leaves, premature senescence, and a significant reduction in flower production, which eventually leads to the death or total decorative failure of the shrub.

Environmental conditions that favor the presence and migration of insect vectors significantly increase the risk of disease spread. Because phytoplasmas are obligate parasites and reside deep within the plant tissues, there is currently no known cure for infected plants, making early detection and prevention the most critical management steps.

Control strategies focus on physical sanitation and vector management. Infected plants should be identified early, removed entirely, and destroyed to prevent further transmission. Furthermore, implementing a rigorous insecticide program to control insect populations and avoiding the purchase of nursery stock from infested areas are essential practices for maintaining a healthy garden.
