Description

Bean blight, caused by the fungus Stagonosporopsis hortensis (formerly known as Ascochyta phaseolorum), is a destructive plant disease affecting various legumes. It is recognized as a major threat to crop productivity in regions with high humidity and moderate temperatures.

The primary host for this pathogen is the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). The disease targets various growth stages, manifesting on seedlings, leaves, stems, and pods, which can lead to significant yield losses and poor quality of harvested beans.

Early symptoms typically appear as circular to irregular brown or grey spots on the foliage. As the disease progresses, these lesions may expand and coalesce, eventually exhibiting tiny black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia, which serve as the primary source for further spreading the fungus.

The fungus thrives under conditions of high moisture, such as frequent rainfall, heavy dew, and high humidity, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. Spores are easily disseminated via rain splashes, wind, and contaminated farm equipment, making the disease highly contagious in dense plantings.

Effective management and protection strategies rely on an integrated approach. Farmers should prioritize using certified disease-free seeds and selecting resistant bean varieties. Proper agricultural practices, including crop rotation, burial of infected debris, and the timely application of approved fungicides, are essential to minimize the impact of Stagonosporopsis hortensis.
