Water pepper smut is a fungal infection caused by the basidiomycete Sphacelotheca hydropiperis. This pathogen is classified among the smut fungi, known for their ability to colonize the reproductive organs of specific host plants, predominantly within the genus Persicaria.

The primary hosts for this fungus include Persicaria hydropiper, commonly known as water pepper. In agricultural ecosystems, the fungus acts as a specialized parasite that targets the floral structures of these plants, effectively inhibiting their normal development and seed production.

Symptoms are most visible during the flowering stage. Infected ovaries undergo hypertrophy, transforming into swollen galls or sori. These structures are filled with a dark, powdery mass consisting of fungal teliospores, which replace the healthy plant tissue and burst upon maturity to release the inoculum.

Disease development and spread are heavily dependent on environmental humidity and temperature. Fungal spores are disseminated via wind or water droplets, landing on healthy flowers of the host plant. High moisture levels facilitate spore germination and subsequent colonization of the floral tissues, allowing the disease cycle to repeat rapidly.

The economic impact is primarily related to the biological suppression of weed populations. As the fungus renders the affected plants sterile, it limits their spread in the field. Consequently, management strategies focus on monitoring weed density and utilizing cultural practices to maintain field sanitation rather than implementing chemical fungicides.
