Ochre leaf spot of birch is a widespread fungal disease caused by the pathogen Sphaerulina betulae (often identified as Septoria betulae). This pathogen specifically targets birch trees, leading to foliage degradation and affecting the overall vitality of the affected plants throughout the growing season.

The disease primarily affects various species within the Betula genus. It is particularly problematic in dense nurseries, ornamental plantings, and young forests, where high plant density significantly facilitates the spread of spores from infected leaves to healthy ones.

Symptoms initially appear as small, scattered spots on the leaves, which are typically ochre, yellow-brown, or dark brown in color. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often merging into larger necrotic areas surrounded by a dark border. Small black fruiting bodies appear within the spots, indicating the site of spore production.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the disease. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures create an ideal environment for the fungus to sporulate and infect new tissue. The pathogen typically overwinters in fallen leaves, making the detritus layer under the trees a primary reservoir for the next year's infection cycle.

The impact of ochre leaf spot is characterized by premature leaf senescence and defoliation. This reduction in the photosynthetic surface area weakens the tree, makes it more susceptible to environmental stressors and secondary pests, and reduces its aesthetic and commercial value. Integrated management strategies focus on sanitation, such as removing leaf litter, improving tree spacing to promote airflow, and applying protective fungicides in high-risk nursery settings.
