Sphaerulina leaf spot is a widespread fungal disease caused by the pathogen Sphaerulina frondicola. This fungus predominantly infects the foliage of poplar trees, leading to tissue necrosis and significant impairment of photosynthetic activity. In many forestry and horticultural settings, this disease is considered a major factor in reducing tree vigor, especially during humid growing seasons.

The disease primarily affects various species and clones of the genus Populus. It is particularly damaging in nursery settings and young plantations where high plant density and reduced air circulation create a conducive microclimate for fungal proliferation. Mature trees may also be affected, though they usually suffer from reduced growth rates rather than total mortality.

The visual symptoms typically appear as circular or irregular greyish to light-brown spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, the center of these spots develops small, dark fruiting bodies (perithecia) of the fungus. Under heavy infection pressure, individual spots coalesce, leading to severe chlorosis, leaf curl, and premature defoliation, which severely taxes the health of the host tree.

The spread of Sphaerulina frondicola is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and rainfall. The fungus overwinters in infected leaf litter on the ground. In spring, moisture triggers the release of spores, which are then disseminated by wind or rain splash onto emerging foliage. This cycle can repeat multiple times throughout the summer, potentially leading to an epidemic if left unmanaged.

Effective management and control of Sphaerulina leaf spot require a multi-faceted approach to minimize inoculum and enhance tree resilience:

  • Sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying fallen leaves to eliminate overwintering spores.
  • Thinning or proper spacing of trees to improve airflow and promote faster leaf drying.
  • Timely application of chemical fungicides during the early stages of disease development to protect new growth.
  • Promoting overall tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and water management to enhance natural resistance.
