Description
Spinach severe curly top (SSCT) is a destructive viral disease caused by the Spinach severe curly top virus, which belongs to the genus Becurtovirus. This pathogen systemically invades the host plant, severely disrupting its vascular system and arresting metabolic processes, which leads to stunted development and eventual death.
The disease primarily targets garden spinach, but the virus is known to have a broad host range, infecting various weeds and other vegetable crops. This wide range of hosts creates persistent reservoirs for the virus, making it difficult to eradicate once it is established within an agricultural area.
Symptoms of the infection typically involve characteristic leaf curling and stunted growth. Infected plants exhibit chlorosis (yellowing) and leaves that become thick, brittle, and curled downward at the margins. As the disease progresses, the entire plant architecture becomes deformed, rendering the spinach entirely unmarketable.
The transmission of SSCT is strictly dependent on the beet leafhopper (Circulifer tenellus), which acts as the primary vector. The virus is acquired by the leafhopper during feeding and is then transmitted to healthy plants. Warm, dry weather conditions facilitate the movement of these insects, leading to rapid and widespread outbreaks in spinach fields.
Managing this disease requires an integrated approach to minimize crop losses and prevent the spread of the vector population:
- Regular scouting for beet leafhoppers in fields and surrounding areas.
- Implementation of insecticidal sprays to control vector populations during critical growth stages.
- Use of physical barriers like row covers to protect young spinach plants.
