Spizellomycetales is an order of chytrid fungi that includes soil-borne microorganisms capable of causing degradation to plant root systems. While many species within this order are saprotrophs that decompose organic matter, some members act as facultative parasites or vectors for viral plant diseases, making them significant objects of study in agronomy.
The causative agents of the disease are motile zoospores that possess flagella and are able to move through soil moisture to locate plant roots. Unlike higher fungi, their thallus often has a limited structure, allowing them to rapidly colonize the rhizosphere under favorable environmental conditions.
The main crops susceptible to infection include cereals, legumes, and certain vegetable crops, especially when grown in greenhouses or in waterlogged soils. Infection typically occurs during the early stages of vegetation, when the young root system is most vulnerable to the penetration of zoospores.
Symptoms of infestation include stunted growth of seedlings, leaf chlorosis caused by nutritional disruption, and rotting of fine root hairs. Often, external signs resemble nutrient deficiencies, which complicates timely diagnosis and effective management of the pathogen without proper laboratory analysis.
Protection measures include strict control of soil moisture and the improvement of drainage, as excess water facilitates the movement of zoospores. Prevention consists of substrate disinfection, adherence to crop rotation practices, and the use of fungicidal seed treatments that inhibit the activity of chytrid organisms during the early stages of plant development.
