Watercress clubroot (lat. Spongospora nasturtii) is a dangerous obligate parasite belonging to the Plasmodiophorids group. This pathogen causes specific infections in the root system and underground plant tissues, leading to the disruption of normal development and a significant decrease in product quality and marketability.
The primary crop susceptible to this disease is watercress (Nasturtium officinale), commonly cultivated in hydroponic systems or flowing water beds. The pathogen infects the roots, triggering the formation of galls and tissue deformation, which prevents the plant from effectively absorbing water and essential mineral nutrients from the nutrient solution.
Symptoms of infection include the development of characteristic swellings (galls) on the roots, which eventually turn brown and undergo decay. As a result of the infection, plants become stunted, their growth slows significantly, leaves may turn yellow, and in cases of severe infestation, the entire crop may die prematurely, leading to substantial economic losses for growers.
The development and spread of the disease are directly dependent on the aquatic environment. Spores of the pathogen can persist for long periods in root debris and growing substrates, moving easily with water currents. Optimal conditions for infection are high humidity, flowing water, and moderate temperatures, which facilitate the release of zoospores and their active movement toward the host plant roots.
To prevent the spread of Spongospora nasturtii, strict adherence to phytosanitary protocols is essential. Key protective measures include:
- Using only certified, disease-free planting material.
- Thorough disinfection of hydroponic equipment and tools after every growing cycle.
- Monitoring the quality of irrigation water and preventing runoff from contaminated zones.
- Prompt removal and destruction of all plant residues showing signs of infection to minimize the accumulation of inoculum within the production system.
