Sporidesmium blight is a fungal disease caused by species within the Sporidesmium genus. These pathogens are classified as hyphomycetes, characterized by the production of dark, multicellular conidia. The fungus typically survives on debris and within the soil, serving as an inoculum source for subsequent crop cycles under favorable environmental conditions.

This pathogen has a broad host range, often affecting various cereals, grasses, and occasionally broad-leaved crops. It is particularly opportunistic, frequently infecting plants that are already under stress due to nutritional deficiencies, insect damage, or environmental factors. By entering through stomata or wounds, the fungus establishes colonies within the plant tissue.

The primary symptom of this infection includes the development of irregular, often necrotic spots on foliage and stems. As the infection progresses, these areas exhibit characteristic dark, velvety spore-bearing mats. This process leads to tissue degradation, chlorosis, and significantly reduced photosynthetic capacity, which directly stunts the plant's overall development.

Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the disease cycle. The pathogen thrives in environments characterized by high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. Prolonged periods of rainfall or heavy dew facilitate the rapid dispersal of spores across fields, allowing the disease to transition from localized patches to widespread epidemic outbreaks.

Economic damage caused by Sporidesmium can be substantial, as it leads to poor grain filling and reduced biomass production. Effective management requires an integrated approach, prioritizing the removal of infested crop residue to limit inoculum buildup. Farmers should combine strict crop rotation practices with the timely application of systemic or contact fungicides when early signs of leaf spotting are detected.
