Squamarina is a genus of lichens belonging to the family Stereocaulaceae. While it is not a direct plant pathogen, its presence on agricultural crops, fruit trees, and ornamental plants is frequently addressed by agronomists. Lichens are composite organisms consisting of fungi and algae that derive nutrients from the air and rain rather than from the host plant itself.

The impact of Squamarina on trees is primarily indirect but harmful over time. By covering the bark, these lichens restrict gas exchange, which is essential for the healthy physiological processes of the tree. Furthermore, they can trap moisture, leading to bark softening and providing a harbor for diverse populations of insects and pathogens that cause true fungal diseases.

Symptoms of infestation are recognized by the growth of thalli, which appear as crust-like, scaly, or sometimes leaf-like structures on the bark surface. Their colors typically range from yellowish-grey to brown. These structures can spread over large areas of the trunk and branches if left untreated, particularly on slow-growing or aging specimens.

Development and spread are driven by environmental factors. High atmospheric humidity, lack of direct sunlight, and poor airflow are the primary drivers of colonization. Squamarina is most commonly found on the northern, shaded sides of tree trunks or in neglected, overgrown orchards where microclimates remain consistently damp throughout the growing season.

Management and prevention focus on maintaining tree vigor and improving environmental conditions. Key strategies include regular pruning to increase light penetration and air movement, which naturally discourages lichen growth. Chemical control using copper-based fungicides during the dormant season is highly effective in eliminating lichen colonies without damaging the host tree.
