Squamarina lentigera is a specific type of soil-dwelling lichen that is often misidentified as a plant disease in agricultural settings. While it is not a parasitic pathogen that infects plant tissues directly, it acts as a competitor by colonizing bare soil surfaces, thereby hindering the establishment and growth of agricultural crops.

The biological nature of this organism is a symbiotic association between a fungus and an alga. Unlike traditional plant diseases that utilize chemical or biological mechanisms to harm the host, Squamarina lentigera causes mechanical and physical damage to the soil environment, significantly reducing the viability of the seedbed.

Signs of its presence include the formation of dense, crusty, scale-like structures covering the top layer of the soil.
