Description
The causative agent of this condition is the fungus Stachybotrys chartarum. It is a filamentous fungus that thrives on cellulose-rich substrates, such as hay, straw, and agricultural residues. In the context of agronomy, Stachybotrys is primarily recognized as a post-harvest pathogen that degrades the quality of forage crops and poses a significant risk to livestock health due to the production of potent mycotoxins.
This fungus typically affects forage materials like baled hay and straw that have been exposed to high moisture levels. Field contamination often occurs when crops are harvested under rainy conditions or when they remain on the ground for too long, allowing the fungi present in the soil to colonize the organic material. Once inside a storage facility, the fungus can spread rapidly if the environment remains humid.
The most visible signs of Stachybotrys infestation include the development of a slimy or powdery black, dark green, or gray fungal growth on the surface of plant tissues. Infected hay often turns dull and brittle, and it may emit a musty or damp odor. Upon mechanical handling, such as moving hay bales, dense clouds of spores are released, which is a clear indicator of a severe fungal colony.
Fungal development is heavily dependent on moisture. Stachybotrys requires a water activity level above 0.90 to colonize materials effectively. High humidity in storage structures, combined with temperatures between +20°C and +25°C, provides the perfect conditions for proliferation. Improperly ventilated barns or warehouses create stagnant air pockets that encourage the fungus to spread across stored agricultural products.
The primary concern regarding Stachybotrys is its ability to produce macrocyclic trichothecene mycotoxins, which cause severe health issues in animals known as stachybotryotoxicosis. Preventive measures are critical: farmers should ensure that hay is dried to a moisture content below 15% before baling. Storage areas must be kept clean, dry, and well-ventilated to prevent moisture accumulation, and regular inspections of stored feed are necessary to detect early stages of mold growth.
