The disease is caused by the fungus Stagonospora foliicola, which belongs to the class of Ascomycetes. It is primarily identified as a foliar pathogen that targets various cereal crops, leading to significant physiological stress and reducing the overall vitality of the affected plants.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include wheat and barley. While often confused with other species of leaf-spotting fungi, Stagonospora foliicola has distinct morphological characteristics that allow for its specific identification under laboratory conditions.
