Phoma leaf spot, caused by the fungus Stagonosporopsis andigena, is a significant foliar disease affecting potato crops globally. This pathogen specifically targets plants within the Solanaceae family, disrupting essential metabolic processes by damaging the leaf tissue and limiting the plant's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis.

The fungus is characterized by its ability to produce pycnidia—small, dark fruiting bodies that appear on the necrotic spots of the leaves.
